Bringing Biofuels into the Classroom
Thursday December 5, 2024 3:15pm - 3:45pm CST
This workshop is sponsored by Growth Energy.

Gen Z and Gen Alpha are the two most environmentally-conscious generations in history. However, research shows that these kids also occasionally feel powerless against environmental challenges. Luckily, biofuels offer a path forward, especially for students who are close to the ag sector. This uniquely American source of renewable energy already helps the environment today and is poised to take on an even bigger role lowering emissions in the future. Learn how biofuels are already green (and getting greener), what advantages they offer over other renewable sources of energy, how they affect farmers and drive change in America's agricultural sector, and much more in this presentation delivered by Growth Energy, the nation's largest biofuel trade association.

Farming is Risky Business: A Simulation-Based Learning Platform for Teaching Risk Management
Thursday December 5, 2024 3:15pm - 3:45pm CST
This workshop is sponsored by Custom Ag Solutions.

The Farming is Risky Business (FRB) Web-Based Learning Platform is a free and comprehensive resource for teaching students about risk management concepts and Federal crop insurance programs. Sponsored by the USDA's Risk Management Agency (RMA), the FRB platform's content is state-specific and aligned with national and state content standards.

The FRB learning experience revolves around an interactive and competitive simulation game wherein students make annual production and marketing decisions on a simulated farming operation. After students make their decisions, the simulation runs and delivers their financial results. In many ways, the simulation resembles better-known games such as "The Farming Game" or even "Life." The FRB content and simulation are dynamic and highly engaging, with unique outcomes that change for every student in every workshop.

Utilizing Our Global Agriculture Community to Stretch Students Outside Their Comfort Zone to Develop Independence and Responsibility
Thursday December 5, 2024 3:15pm - 3:45pm CST
Agriculture teachers know that our classroom extends outside the ag room and school. Many of us take students to various competitions and conventions in and out of state. Why not teach them beyond our borders? Learn from an experienced agriculture teacher who has taken students outside of the United States on agriculture tours. Students experience where imported food comes from, are immersed in local culture and customs, and experience how people live in other countries. By working with companies like Education First (EF), teachers receive support with training, tour selection, student recruitment, trip preparations (itineraries, lodging, flights), and on-tour logistics. See what students have experienced on agriculture tours in the Dominican Republic and Ireland. Find out how you can make the world your classroom!

Farming is Risky Business: A Simulation-Based Learning Platform for Teaching Risk Management
Thursday December 5, 2024 4:00pm - 4:30pm CST

Preparing the Welders of Tomorrow: Enhancing Your Agricultural Mechanics Class with Virtual Reality Welding Trainers
Thursday December 5, 2024 4:00pm - 4:30pm CST
The American Welding Society predicts a need for 360,000 new welders by 2027. Agricultural education teachers who teach agricultural mechanics courses are in a unique position to train their students to eventually fill these positions. However, sometimes they lack the confidence in their own welding skills needed to properly and safely teach their students. One way to build confidence in teachers is to use Virtual Reality welding trainers prior to practicing live welding in a laboratory setting. This workshop discusses benefits of Virtual Reality trainers, options available for teachers and teacher educators, and strategies to implement this technology in both the secondary and postsecondary classroom.
